Post Vancouver City Timelapse
I first saw this yesterday, from a link on Twitter, and now it seems a few newspapers in BC this morning are showcasing it. I'd say it's a perfect time launch with the Olympics and it looks like they are getting many views.

-----------------

It's interesting how everything came together for that video.

  • The singer and songwriter had a song about Vancouver they wanted to promote so they searched YouTube for some interesting videos.
  • They came across the TimeLapseHD videos from David and Dan Newcomb.
  • They contacted David and Dan Newcomb about combining the song with the timelapse videos.
  • David and Dan Newcomb at this time where also thinking of a similar project.
  • The Vancouver Olympics are just weeks away so the timing is very good.

I first came across the video through the News Feed on Facebook, which is a great way to find interesting videos.

A BIG (x2) ~ I'm Agreeing with milapse.

But I'm pretty sure that motorized dolly rig is either a DIY or a mod.

(B/C They are typically big bucks 'out of the box' new or from pro rental houses.)

Any luck in tracking down David or Dan Newcomb or the rig you posted in the pic? I know you’re an architecture guy and that looks like it’s possibly a modified motor driven hoist trolley that’s been inverted. (Similar design any way.)

http://www.drillspot.com/tag/trolley/

The applications for adjustable rigs that can run on a single rail, pipe, or board are almost limitless. A self-contained motorized unit that can run on a ‘rail’ vs. a track is a more versatile design (plus) the rail design makes for an easier transition from horizontal to vertical using the same unit.

Any thoughts?

I figured someone here would have info about it. David and Dan must be one of those smart timelapsers that don't give away their secrets. I'll do some digging.

We've already built our prototype and are testing it now. Nothing really new in the film business. Smart pros have been building rigs and spreading the wealth a long time. (Maybe because pros know it's not the pots and pans that you cook a meal in that count.)

Anyway, any custom rigging house in Hollywood can build one of those rigs made to order.

Take sliders (and the buzz about them) for example ~ we've been using them in film for eons.

Kessler just made one that's inexpensive that the dslr crowd adopted. It's just a matter of how much you want to spend.

http://www.modernstudio.com/cameramounts.html

But maybe I'll adopt your so called 'time lapse attitude' and not share.

Thanks for sharing,

~ Red

I think we can handle our own digging. I see you're at crews west with ten or so years in the business with an ENG background and share the owner's last name. I'll remember that and crews west in the future.

I have been saying for a while now that a self-propelled monorail car is a great way to go, because it could run down extremely long and/or scalable rails ... even curved track.

Hi Tom!

I saw that you tweeted it up and posted the pic. I think if we put our heads together we can come up with a similar and affordable build. The work that you, milapse, and shutterdrone have done (and shared) has been incredible. (This forum is filled with can do people.)

I’d like to see a milapse style head mounted on this thing and the whole unit controlled by open moco with a diy build cost of under $1,000.00 ~ ($500.00 - 750.00 ~ if we really get creative) ~ I’ve got a fab shop working on the ‘car’ as I’m calling it right now and I envision it with spring tension adjustable wheel trucks (on the sides and top) so it could follow a rail from maybe as small as 1” to 6” or more and be stable and secure with 25-35#’s going horizontal or vertical.

(Obviously) The car isn’t that hard a build. The talent will have to be in integrating it all. (A good drive unit system, the camera mount, (programmable tilt / pan), and controls.)

Best,

~ Red

On the subject of secrecy, that seems to be some thing the still photographers seem to have down pat. Most photog's seem to think that if anyone found out the details of their latest technique that their entire livelihood would vapourize. I see it all the time on various photography forums and I can't stand it. On the other hand it seems to me that most cine people seem more than happy to share, maybe because of the collaborative nature of film in the first place. This place is great in the way folks share. That's why I like this forum.

THE ONLY REASON I HANG AROUND FORUMS IS TO LEARN, AND SHARE, SO AS SOON AS SECRECY BECOMES AN ISSUE THEN THERE'S NO POINT BEING THERE ANY MORE.

My 2 cents.

JJ

I'm sure you guys have thought of this concept, it's probably even on this forum somewhere.

The camera base would be motorized and designed to run on some sort of track. The track would be in short 2 foot or 3 foot sections, and you might have 2 or 3 of them. When the camera rig clears one section that section is moved to the front for a continuous track. Maybe even design the tracks to bend.

Yeah there is a BBC video, "Plants", where they did a 360 degree dolly move around a tree. You could see the ground in the shot, so I think that is how they pulled the shot off. Removing and adding track I mean. Bendable track would be great! Imagine the possibilities!

I believe that adding and removing track was how they made 'The abandoned road',

interesting background story

I saw the other week that Kessler have bendable track, which seems to work well,
